Sailing around the local skies on a summer afternoon can be rewarding and satisfying, and
for many it is the consumation of our sport. But to some, mastering the local environment engenders a longing
for a greater challenge. Modern, and even some not-so-modern sailplanes are capable of covering great distances.
To measure one's skill by striking out on an adventure, leaving behind the comfort and security of the home airport
brings an entirely new dimension to gliding. To take a downwind heading and follow the energy of the sky for as
far as it will carry you, landing at the end in whatever field or airport presents itself is great fun. Other
scenarios involve flying to a pre-declared goal or following a course around distant turnpoints and returning
to the home field at the end of the day. For those who wish to measure their skills against others, many levels
of soaring competition are available. Cross country pilots are invited to post the digital records of their
flights on the "On Line Contest". Flights from all over the world are posted for review by others who
share this passion. To join this fraternity is to become a member of a very exclusive club.
RWSA encourages and supports members who wish to pursue this aspect of soaring. Club aircraft are
available for cross country flights. Our Board of Directors includes a Chief of Cross Country Instruction and our
flight instructors include two Master Cross Country Instructors. A number of members, experienced cross country pilots
themselves are available to offer advice and support for these endeavors. The club environment fosters the
friendships from which retrieve crews may be chosen, or several pilots may fly together to some distant goal.
Do you harbor a cross country pilot within you? If you've read this far you may already have
an answer. Join us in the adventure!
