The Soaring Society of America is the national organization for soaring
enthusiasts. It is also the United States representative of the Fédération
Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) which is the international governing
body for all sport aviation records. Pilots who wish to claim records or
badges for soaring flights must be members of the SSA at the time of the
flight, comply with FAI and SSA regulations governing such awards and submit
claims to these agencies for approval.
The SSA has its home office in Hobbes, NM and publishes a
really nice, glossy, monthly magazine covering topics of interest to our
community. With a minimal paid staff and many volunteers, this organization
advocates for our sport and provides a framework for interaction among its
many members including a large yearly convention held at various locations
around the country.
The Red Wing Soaring Association is a chapter of the SSA and
RWSA membership includes SSA membership and a subscription to the magazine, a
